Since 2010, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has been screening athletes for sickle cells, red blood cells shaped like sickles that block blood flow and deny parts of the body of important nutrients. Previous studies were also able to trace the likelihood of injuries to specific genes like the collagen-producing COL1A1 and COL5A1.
